The first Ninety-Nine Nights was one of Microsoft Japan's key titles in the Xbox 360's early life. The second entry doesn't look like it will have as much stature. In fact, it's not even going to be a first party title!

This information comes our way from Inside Games, which is hosting a live blog from Microsoft's Xbox 360 Media Briefing 2009 press conference today in Tokyo.

According to the site, Konami will be serving as publisher on Ninety-Nine Nights II. Unfortunately, that's all the site's live blog says about the game. It lists a release date as "TBA."

There isn't much else of pertinence in Inside Games' live blog at this point, but here's a quick summary.

Microsoft shared a recap of the 360's current worldwide performance thus far. The system currently has a userbase of 31.4 million, with 20 million Xbox Live users. Between January and August, Japan saw 61 Xbox 360 titles released.

Surprise game announces from the press conference appear to be limited to foreign titles. Microsoft confirmed Japanese releases for Fable III and also said that it would make a formal announcement for Borderland shortly.

On the third party front, the big news comes from Capcom. Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi appeared in a video message and said that the Lost Planet 2 demo has seen comparable success to the Resident Evil 5 demo. At the Tokyo Game Show, players will be able to sample eight player multiplayer.

I presume Microsoft is saving its big price drop announcement until the end of the press conference, although the information has already leaked out.

I'll have a followup report if anything else is unveiled.

  • What.The.Hell? How did this happen? Did Konami ask for it, or did MS beg someone to take it off their hands? Maybe MS will try to position it as "Konamis's Dynasty Warriors," against "Capcom's Dynasty Warriors" (Sengoku Basara), and the OG Dynasty Warriors from Koei. I don't know if that has the potential to help sales. Did enough people say that they'd buy the game if it had a Japanese company logo on the box when surveyed?

  • Not a clue here.

I'm not even sure if Konami's role with the game was actually announced at the press conference, as in specifically highlighted, or if it was just mentioned in passing.

Maybe if MS had actually invited the English speaking press...
