Dynasty Warriors Online set for PlayStation 3
This latest Dynasty Warriors game is a bit different. And it's free to play too!

The PlayStation 3 got another major name in the online gaming space today. Koei announced today a PlayStation 3 version of Shin Sangoku Musou Online (aka Dynasty Warriors Online). The PS3 version will be released in 2010.
Koei made the announcement during its "Network Entertainment Festa" stage event at the Tokyo Game Show today. 4gamer reports that no details were announced on the game aside from the time period.
Timed with the TGS announcement, Koei opened a teaser page for the game off its Gamecity portal. The page states that the PS3 version will, like its PC counterpart, have no basic online charge for play.
[NOTE: I previously wrote in this space that the game would be available for free. This is incorrect. The wording at the official site indicates that this will be a retail purchase. The price is currently marked as TBA.]
For Koei, this will be the firm's second dabbling with massively multiplayer online titles on the PS3. The company previously released Uncharted Waters Online for the system.

I just can't imagine this being anything but a downloadable game if it going to be free to both get and play. I can't see what advantage there would be to manufacturing a disc version (on expensive blu-ray discs, no less) that they'd be giving away for free and won't be making much additional profit from the consumer on.
As for the game itself, I'm a pretty big DW fan, so I'd definitely be willing to give it a try (I'm not really big on PC games so I never tried the original). Hopefully it does eventually get an English release, but if it's good enough I'd probably keep playing it even it was Japanese-only (all of this still assuming it does turn out to be a downloadable game, of course).

Did they specifically say it would be free? Because I'm not sure why they would say 発売決定 if they planned to give it away for free. Anyway, it should be interesting to see if this one takes off. At least it has a brand Japanese gamers are familiar with.

Actually, the information it being free was wrong.
The online play charges are free. The actual charge for the game is TBA.
I'll fix it.

Well I guess I won't be playing it after all unless it does end up getting an English release. While I wouldn't mind playing it in Japanese if it was free, if I have to pay for it then I'd rather be playing it in English.
