This probably isn't news, but it's something I didn't notice before so I thought I'd pass it on in case anyone else out there didn't notice as well.

When announcing DSi LL last week, Nintendo shared a bunch of official product images. They looked a little something like this:

Ignoring the size differences, it's pretty much just the DSi in a new color, right?

Actually, the product images don't show one major feature of the iLL. The current DSi has a matte finish. With the DSi LL, Nintendo has gone with a glossy finish for the cover.

The only reason I noticed this is because this week's Famitsu has a picture of the system specifically highlighting the glossy finish, noting that it gives the system a "high end feel."

I'd have to agree. While I didn't think much about the DSi LL from Nintendo's official media, the Famitsu images make it look a lot more attractive in my eyes -- at least when closed.

There's also one additional bit in the Famitsu story covering the system. The current DSi has two screen positions. That is to say, the screen can snap into two positions, one angled and one straight. For DSi LL, this has increased to three. The third position looks like it's at a 45 degree angle. The Famitsu story says that this will make it easier to view 1seg broadcasts.

That's all. Carry on, carry on.

  • I did not know that the DSi LL is glossy, just like the DS Lite. I would have expected that since it shared the DSi name, it would have a matte finish. I also did not know that it will have three screen positions, but I am not familiar with 1seg broadcasts.

  • 1seg is a digital broadcasting technology that's used here in Japan. It allows you to basically watch digital television on supporting devices. It's widely supported in cell phones, and Nintendo released a DS peripheral a while back. Sony has one for PSP as well.

  • Cool.
I like the matte finish. The red DSi for example has also a glossy finish. It looks way too shiny lol :)
