Between Famitsu and a CES trailer, Capcom shared a bunch of new details on Super Street Fighter IV this week. For those who had trouble keeping up, the game's official site has been updated with everything, and assistant producer Nakky has come through with some support info at the official blog. Here are all the official details on new ultra combos, arranged costumes, and rival battles.
ULTRA COMBO II
Each character in Super has two Ultra Combos, up from the single combo of the original. The combo can be selected at the character select screen:
Visit the character section of the official site for updated looks at El Fuerte, Cammy, C.Viper, and Ryu showing video clips of both Ultra Combos. According to the blog, the site will be gradually updated with similar videos for each character.
For the record, the names of the known second Ultra Combos are:
1. El Fuerte: El Fuerte Ultra Spark
2. Cammy: CQC (Cammy Quick Combination)
3. C.Viper: Burning Dance
4. Ryu: Metsu Shoryuken
In the blog, Nakky makes mention of one Ultra Combo in particular:
That's C.Viper doing her Burning Dance move. This image resembles artwork for "Shikei Combo" (Death Penalty Combo), an original combo that was created by SFIV main designer Ikeno. The artwork, introduced at the blog when SFIV's arcade version was in development, looked like this:
In case you're on a quest for Nakky points, Nakky says that if you connected the move with the artwork, you're a "Fearfully Deep Street Fighter IV Blog Mania."
According to Nakky, Ikeno commented in the Street Fighter Art Works book that he wanted the combo to be placed in the game. It looks like this has indeed happened.
ARRANGED COSTUME
Capcom is readying new costumes for all the characters. This means the returning SFIV cast will have a third costume, one new for Super. The newcomers for Super will have just their standard costume and an arranged costume.
As mentioned in the Famitsu article, those who purchased arranged costumes for the original will be able to use them in Super. Different from the Famitsu story, the official site's wording seems to suggest that you'll have to actually make the download again. At least they'll be free!
The blog post introduces five costumes along with design artwork. I'm not sure if these are proper names or not.
- Rufus's Jiang Shi costume
- Cammy's Vega-sama Cosplay costume (Vega as in M.Bison)
- Zangief's Mecha ZangieF costume (the Japanese is written as メカザンギF, which I think may make it seem like something out of a robot anime... although I really know nothing about robot anime so don't quote me on that)
- An M.Bison (aka Balrog) costume
- A Cody costume
For Bison's costume, Nakky notes that the original design had the character gloveless, showing off his bling. They decided that the gloves are part of the character's identity, resulting in the final gloved design.
Nakky also reveals that three characters will have a unique property about their arranged costume. Select the tenth color, and a part of the costume will actually change. She doesn't show screens, and suggests that players should look for specifics on their own by actually playing the game.
RIVAL BATTLE
As detailed in the Famitsu story, similar to the first SFIV, when you reach stage 7 in arcade mode, you'll fight a Rival Battle, complete with an event scene. Super, of course, adds rivals for all the new characters. Super also gives some characters a second rival.
Rival event scenes shown at the site include Ryu and Ken, Chun-Li and Juri (Chun-Li apparently wants to arrest Juri, a S.I.N. engineer), Cody and Guy, and Guile and Vega (M.Bison).
In the original, Ryu's rival was Sagat. Nakky notes that players asked why it was Sagat instead of Ken. For Super, the staff decided to give as many characters as possible additional rivalries, and the Ryu vs Ken rivalry was the first to be set.
So, some characters now have two rivals. Which rival fight appears when you play the game? You'll actually be able to select this. When the "Fight Your Rival" screen appears, you can input a special command to make your selection. If you don't input a command, the game will alternate between rivals each time you play.
WORLD STAGE
The System section of the site for some unclear reason includes a section showing off Super's new stages. It looks like Super will have just four new stages: Savanna, India, Korea, and Construction Grounds. These were all previously introduced.
OTHER STUFF
The blog has one random piece of additional info. You can now set it so that your opponent's BGM plays in the background, not just during CPU fights but during fights against another player as well. Nakky believes this will give a dramatic mood to fights.
