Nintendo opened an official site for the recently unearthed "The Last Story" today. A new name for Cosmic Walker? Definitely not!
The Last Walker is actually a new Wii RPG that's being developed by Blue Dragon developer Mistwalker.
In the past entries at the Mistwalker official blog, CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi has alluded to an upcoming game unveil. This is presumably that very game.
While the official site is in a teaser state, Nintendo shared a few additional details during an investors meeting earlier today. The Last Story will have a story with the theme of the universal feelings held by people. It's being co-developed by Mistwalker and Nintendo with the aim of creating a new form of RPG.
As revealed earlier in the day, The Last Story is set for release some time this year. The official site promises a developer blog to begin in March.

Those Wii RPGs are really picking up. With Dragon Quest X around the corner, Nintendo is sure to market the Wii as the mainstay platform for RPGs. Or is it the other way around? Everyone is flocking to the Wii because of Dragon Quest X? And EVERYTIME a Japanese Dev says, they're 'creating a new form of RPG' or any of similar mish-mash words, I am ultimately disappointed. They Said That for Infinite Undiscovery and even Nostalgia! For crying out loud. And those two couldn't be closer to the traditional formula for RPGs than anything.
It really takes SEGA and ATLUS to change up the game for us in the JRPG genre. Thank you SEGA. NO THANK YOU Square-Enix. Where the heck is my Dragon Quest 9 localization??? wth.

especially in this case, i say.
let's face it, Sakaguchi hasn't shown he can or is going to redefine anything with Mistwalker
his games with Mistwalker have been neither innovative (for ANY of his 5 MW games) nor in 4 cases out of 5 (3 DS titles and Blue Dragon) been that good.
i agree with you, if this was Atlus, or some of the other smaller jrpg devs, saying they were going to mix things up, i'd be a little trusting
but Sakaguchi and Mistwalker? i'd expect at best a shiny new version of whats been done before.
