30 years, eh?

Our latest update on things that begin with "Final Fantasy" comes from Korean game site Gameshot by way of Japanese Square Enix fan site FF Reunion.

To commemorate the launch of Final Fantasy XIII in Korea, Square Enix held a roundtable interview session with FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama, FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase, and Square Enix chief Twitter person Shinji Hashimoto on the 28th. FF Reunion translated just a couple of pertinent bits and pieces from the Korean language transcript that was posted at Gameshot.

Regarding FFXIII sister project Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the staff said "It's taking some time, but development is progressing well. We plan on showing it at the appropriate time. We have the FFXIII localization and FFXIV, so I believe it will come after that."

The staff was asked its usual question about a Final Fantasy VII remake. Kitase responded: "We've gotten this question a lot from many countries (laughs). To make FFXIII at this level of quality, it took us 3 to 4 years. If we were to make FFVII in the same style of FFXIII, it would take 10 times as long, so it would be difficult to take it up immediately. However, we always keep in mind how often this is requested."

There seems to be quite a bit more in the original interview so those with Korean ability should check it out.

  • 40 years? Well, maybe if they hired the developers for Duke Nukem: Forever.

  • o rly? I think he's trying to hide the fact that there may be activity in the near future. They'll do it sooner or later.

  • His answer is the same everywhere, in every interview, in every country, especially on Gamasutra.com. There is weight-of-experience in what he says. FFVII remake is not possible, at the current level of technology. If they were to remake it for the PS2, okay... maybe that is possible. But certainly not on PS3.

FFVII was so huge in scope with so much content, so much world to explore that it was only possible with those easily shapeable polygons and simple textures.

  • Instead of remaking an great game from the past, they should really take the formula from the past games (i.e FFVI, FFVII) and make the new games along those same lines. In my opinion, FFXIII was too straight lined. In FFVII and FFVI in particular there side quests you could do, and you could even end the game with not all the characters (i.e. Yuffie, Gogo). Plus there was so much more you could do in VII (breeding and racing chocobos, Golden Saucer games, etc.).
Now don't get me wrong I enjoyed playing XIII, but I would've rather had it more along the lines of VI or VII. I really hope for XV that some aspects of the old games are incorporated. Here's to hoping.

  • just release Versus XIII already

  • SE should just give a press release where they admit they no longer can conceive of a quality original RPG title ever again.
