Bad news if you were hoping Sony would follow Nintendo and bring 3D technology to the PlayStation Portable line. Speaking with Sankei Biz, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai downplayed Nintendo's 3DS goggle-free technology, citing its lack of precision as a limitation.

In an interview conducted at E3 on the 16th, the site got Hirai's reaction to Nintendo's 3DS announcement. Said Hirai, "Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations."

Hirai would not issue a comment on the 3DS itself, stating that he'd yet to see the system (this was on the second day of the show). However, he apparently gave the site indication that Sony does not intend to pursue naked-eye 3D technology for portables.

Expectedly, given the focus of Sony's E3 showing, Hirai's stance was different for PlayStation 3's 3D tech. "With such things as a strengthened 3D-compatible software lineup, we aim to increase hardware sales," said Hirai of the console.

Hirai also seems excited about PlayStation Move, which saw final release information and pricing announced during E3. "It allows for high precision movements, and has become a product with appeal."

  • Of course the SCE President is going to downplay it. He is the SCE President. Haha. Besides if people don't like the way it looks they can turn it off. Although from the reactions of the developers, I am sure it is fine.

  • Nice one, that means that we'll see a PSP2 in 1-2 years with 3D-effects. You know, now that Sony has something new to copy.

  • @Mreow
orly, I suppose you are one of those people who seem to think Nintendo somehow invented motion sensing or 3D in 2006. Everything else before that was just their idea, right; they must patented it, surely? Oh my oh my, how grateful I must be.
