PlayStation 3 is taking another step up in hard drive capacity. The current 120 gigabyte standard model will give way to 160 gigabyte and 320 gigabyte models later this month.

The new higher capacity models, part of the new CECH-2500 series, will become available on July 29 in 160 gigabyte and 320 gigabyte varieties, priced respectively at ¥29,980 and ¥34,980. Both will be available in Charcoal Black.

Sony will also offer the 160 gigabyte model in a new Classic White color, also priced ¥29,980. Joining the new color, Sony will sell like-colored Dualshock 3 and vertical stands. These will be released day-in at, respectively, ¥5,500 and ¥2,000.

Also on July 29, Sony will offer The PlayStation 3 Terrestrial Digital Recorder Pack, a bundle consisting of the Torne digital video recorder and a 160 Charcoal Black system. This will carry a ¥36,980 price.

To make way for the new models, the current 120 gigabyte CECH-2011A series of systems will switch to open pricing tomorrow, July 7. This means retailers will set pricing on their own, and is usually a move taken to get rid of stock of out-of-production product.

  • Are people actually filling up these HDDs or is Sony caught up in some 'mine is bigger' war with MS? I'm still rockin the 60GB PS3 and 20GB 360, neither more than half full.

  • @synce: Well I have a 500GB hard drive and about 150GB of it is in use, so I can see some people being in need of bigger drives (especially those who use the video side of the PS store or use that Torne thing, as one HD episode of a TV show is over 1GB alone). My original HD was indeed a 60GB as well, but I started having so much stuff (PSN games, game installs, etc.) that eventually there was no way I could download anything or install something without deleting something first. Getting a bigger hard drive was worth it for the convenience more than anything else.

  • You don't need to get another system for more space. There are several places online where you can get 1TB HDDs for about $100, I'd rather go for those.

  • Bigger = better. Video games taught me that. I just replaced my original 20 GB 360 HDD last week, because I couldn't take erasing XLA games to make room for installs anymore. My Xbox definitely needed the extra room more than my PS3, but I threw in a 250 gigger in there just for fun too.
