This is another one of those worst kept industry secret candidates. A week after everyone who cared figured it out, Square Enix formally announced today that has signed a deal with Activision Blizzard Pty Limited for the Japanese publishing rights to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Square Enix will publish the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game here in Japan. A release is set for Winter. Overseas, the game is scheduled for November 10 release through Activision.

News of Square Enix's involvement with Modern Warfare 2 was first leaked out last week through a teaser site which, while not specifying the game's name, showed a giant "2" written in the game's font, along with a copyright statement specifying the Call of Duty series and Activision. The site has since been updated with a proper Modern Warfare 2 URL, but is still lacking in content.

Prior to this, Square Enix's involvement with the series came through the original Modern Warfare. While Activision's now defunct Japanese arm published the original release, Square Enix is serving as publisher for the upcoming Xbox 360 Platinum Collection version.
